Feb 23, 2003 · When I put an 8.5" 10 bolt in mine a few years ago, I had the tubes welded to the center for two reasons. I could see that the tubes were leaking, and I read that welding the tubes to the center makes the housing stronger. I saw in one of my magazines where some guy had an early 70's Camaro that ran the 1/4 mile in the nines with a 8.5" rear.

I spoke with someone and they asked if it was cast iron or cast steel. I have no idea what it is. The axle tubes that go into a cast iron center section are plug welded in place (think GM 10 and 12 bolt). I remember hearing the weld itself is stainless. I've never looked into it but I wonder if you can even buy stainless mig wire. The bearing rides right on the axle . No race , the axle is the race . The bearing is a needle type bearing. I am pretty sure this is not a recomended practice .

The low carbon steel (axle tubes) doesnt have any stresses in it to think about. Its about as normalized as it gets. And very low carbon content. What kind of stresses are involved. Heck, you have more of an issue with cold rolled mild steel plate than you will with this axle
